Thomas Gardner, a Stroud & Bristol carrier, had a business here from 1795 until 1801, when it became the King's Arms Inn. It was purchased by Thomas Wall in 1818, who enlarged and improved it, and it became the Royal George Hotel - an inn & posting house. The George Inn, in the High St then closed.
